I’ve long been a fan of the Supernova Glide series and this latest shoe sees a complete reinvention of the design. With so much changed I was a little nervous but pretty excited to lace up and head out.
The Supernova range from Adidas has always been a favorite of mine as they offer above average build and comfort without the massive $200+ price tag that you often find with the Adistar range.
Just a few minutes in these shoes is all you need to notice the cushioning and unique fit Flywire gives you.
The first thing that you’ll spot is the seamless upper that has been redesigned for the shoe. The new upper body is noticeably more breathable and allows for more foot movement than previous models offered.
As someone who often runs sans socks, the seamless construction was ideal and despite the close fit, the shoe didn’t rub. Running without socks you also really notice the air mesh lining that helps circulate air around the shoe.
Anyone familiar with any of the Supernova range will be well aware that the true quality of these shoes lies in the sole.
The outer sole has had serious thought put into it. There is a real premium feel to the outer and it’s clear that these shoes have been built to take the miles! As with all of the top end Addidas range, the Supernova Glide 6 outer sole features AdiWEARTM – the durable, non-marking rubber that not only helps with scrape and scuff resistance but also with traction, flexibility and most importantly helps reduce heel and toe-off wear.
The Continental rubber tread proved to be stable – gripping in the dry, wet and a light frost.
The midsole is without a doubt my favourite part of the Supernova Glide 6!
The first layer of the shoe is made of shock-absorbing RespoEVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) provides a comfortable and secure fit that dynamically follows the movement of the foot throughout the stride.
The redesign also sees the addition of a new layer of Boost foam underneath the RespoEVA.
What Is Boost Technology?
Okay so I admit that even I, the fountain of all running shoe knowledge had to look up what Boost technology is…
Cutting through the marketing hype, it turns out that the Boost foam helps create a “springy” sensation that makes them ideal for longer races. The Boost also helps with cushioning comfort and support.
While I’ve always been a little sceptical of “torsion systems” it does feel like it helps with midsole stability.
The Adidas Supernova Glide 6 offered a true to size fit. I take a US 11 and the shoe felt comfortable. I do have slightly wider feet than most so I did have to struggle with the laces to get the right feel.
The shoe doesn’t feel overly heavy but at 300 grams for the men’s and 249 grams for the women’s, they are by no means the lightest shoes on the market.
The heel-to-toe drop was 8.7mm thanks to a 31.7mm cushioned heel and a 2.3mm toebox.
